Vietnamese street food · Westlands & Karen, Nairobi

Ăn cơm chưa?

“Ăn cơm chưa?” — literally “eaten rice yet?” It’s how Vietnamese people say hello. Come find out what it means.

01 — Our story

Every bowl is a whole meal.

Most Vietnamese street food isn’t a starter or a side. It’s the whole thing, in one bowl or one baguette.

The logic is simple and it’s everywhere: rice, rice noodles or a baguette for carbs. Bones and spices for the broth. Meat for protein. Leafy greens, herbs and fish sauce for everything else — then chilli and lime, because flavour.

That’s how we build our menu at Măm Măm. Our rice dishes are home recipes from Tri, our executive chef — the kind of food you’d eat at a family table in Vietnam, served up on Mwanzi Road.

Fun fact: in Vietnamese, you don’t say “let’s have dinner at home”. You say ăn cơm — “eat rice”.

  1. Phở

Flat rice noodles. Yes — “phở” is the name of the noodle, not just the famous soup.

  2. Bún

Round, soft, slippery rice vermicelli with a little sourness to it.

  3. Miến

Chewy, see-through glass noodles, usually made from mung bean flour, or rice flour mixed with tapioca.

  4. Cơm

Rice. The everyday essential of every Vietnamese household.

  5. Bánh mì

Our only non-rice item. The French left the crusty baguette, pâté and cold cuts; Vietnam made the filling louder and fresher.
